A Russian woman has been found guilty of killing her newborn girl and keeping her body in a freezer for five years. A court in northern Russia found Lyudmila Smirnova, 37, guilty of killing her child by smothering her with a cloth shortly after giving birth in 2007.The body was kept in a freezer until it was discovered by Ms Smirnova’s partner last year.It's believed the unidentified partner pulled the body out of the freezer, thinking it was meat he could cook. The court took into account the fact that Ms Smirnova pleaded guilty and has two other children when it handed down a 22 month suspended sentence. The sentence follows last week's news of a Russian man who admitted killing at least six people before eating their hearts and livers. The case of Russia's "cannibal serial killer", Alexander Bychkov has shocked the nation after he was arrested last week. Bychkov wrote in a diary of his crimes that he turned to murder after his girlfriend left him for being "a wimp". Bychkov, 23, was arrested for shoplifting but then told police that he had buried bodies in his backyard in Belinsky, a town some 630 km southeast of Moscow, a spokeswoman for the investigative committee charged with the case said. "Six bodies were found buried there," she said, adding that the death toll might be higher still. She said investigators were looking into media reports the killer cut out his victims' livers and hearts and ate them. In passages from his diary leaked to Russian media, Bychkov said his girlfriend had kicked him out. "She said I was a wimp, not a wolf ... I will show her ... Maybe she will stop complaining and understand that I am a lone wolf." In 2007, a Russian serial murderer convicted of killing 48 people was jailed for life. Alexander Pichushkin bragged he had no regrets and said killing was like falling in love.Russian media called him the "chessboard murderer" because he said he planned to kill 64 people - one for each square on the board.

Peter Rule bragged to friends that he once escaped jail with notorious kidnappers and knew gangster Mark "Chopper" Read.But as police put it when the Melbourne man disappeared in November 2009, Mr Rule "talked the talk, but couldn't walk the walk".It was "the talk" that led to Mr Rule being murdered, then disposed of in the most brutal way.His mistake was to tell a small-time criminal named Leonard Borg that he knew he was growing cannabis.Borg, found guilty on Monday of the 56-year-old's murder, took Mr Rule to a factory where he shot him at close range 10 times - six in the head and four to the chest.He then went to extraordinarily gruesome attempts to cover up his crime.Over a period of days Borg dismembered Mr Rule's body, set it on fire and then placed parts of it in a tub of hydrochloric acid.Mr Rule's remains were then taken by Borg and an accomplice named Michael Spiropoulos to the Great Ocean Road. Some of them were disposed of in scrub land, while the contents of the acid tub were thrown into the ocean near Lorne.Police later found remains at an Aireys Inlet location.Mr Spiropoulos was the key prosecution witness in Borg's Victorian Supreme Court trial. He helped Borg clean up the scene and was sent to a service station to buy wood and petrol to burn the body.He returned to the factory the next day and saw black smoke pouring from the front roller door."You could smell the burning. It had a weird smell to it," he told the jury.The pair then went out and bought an electric chainsaw and candle oil.The next morning, he said, he saw a 44-gallon barrel which was smouldering in the middle of the factory."It was visibly obvious to me like it was a body, the bottom half," he said.Mr Spiropoulos said Borg had told him previously he had heard that a man called "Peter" had dobbed him in to police over a house where he grew cannabis."He just said to get a peace of mind ... he has to sort of get rid of the guy."Borg's barrister Carmen Randazzo SC had argued jurors would not be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Borg killed Mr Rule.After a seven-week trial and three days' deliberation the jury disagreed and found the 28-year-old guilty of murder.A member of Mr Rule's family sitting in the public gallery screamed. Others wept.Mark Rule said the circumstances of his brother's death were distressing."We know he was no angel, but he was our brother. We loved him, we miss him greatly," he told reporters."What a way to go. Can you imagine that?"A pre-sentence hearing will be held on a date to be fixed.Friends of Mr Rule told his committal hearing last August that he claimed to know Chopper Read.
